What it is
A chrome steel liner is made of steel with added chrome to increase resistance to corrosion. It's used in both the aft and forward seal boxes of a ship's stern tube.
How it works
The aft seal prevents water from entering the stern tube and oil from leaking outside. The forward seal prevents oil from leaking from the stern tube to the engine room.

The chrome steel liner is tightened to the split clamp ring on the propeller shaft using bolts
